The TMX Anchor Loop Project

Project Name: Trans Mountain Expansion (TMX) - Anchor Loop
Study Area: Central Rocky Mountains, Alberta and British Columbia
Client: Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion Projects (Kinder Morgan Canada Inc.)
Nature of Work:

The project entailed the construction of 158km of a 30/36 inch crude oil pipeline from Hinton, Alberta to Rearguard, BC. The pipeline route traversed the entire length of Jasper National Park and Mount Robson Provincial Park which are recognized as part of a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Site.

TERA was the lead environmental consultant responsible for the preparation of the ESA for the Section 52 application to the NEB. TERA was commissioned to complete early feasibility studies for the project and was an integral part of the regulatory strategic planning, route and facility site selection, government and public consultation, and aboriginal engagement programs. Detailed and comprehensive baseline environmental field studies were undertaken in all disciplines and a landmark ESA was prepared which was a "state-of-the-art" environmental protection and restoration plan.

TERA provided an expert witness at the NEB hearing and successfully defended one of the highest profile applications to be submitted to the NEB. A team of personnel provided TERA environmental field support and environmental inspection services and was responsible for restoration post-construction, monitoring and follow-up programs.

Kinder Morgan was awarded the prestigious Alberta Emerald Award for the Anchor Loop project. The award was in recognition of Kinder Morgan's excellent contribution to environmental stewardship and sustainability.

Duration: 2004 to Present (project on-going).
