Traditional Knowledge Studies

TERA's Traditional Knowledge study services include Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) and Traditional Land Use (TLU) studies. We have designed these services for the engagement of Aboriginal communities potentially impacted by projects. Our team's collection and sharing of Aboriginal traditional knowledge assists in refining routes and ancillary sites, facilitating mitigation development and satisfying regulatory requirements.

TEK Studies

TERA facilitates TEK studies to document the experiential knowledge of Aboriginal communities potentially impacted by a project. Our TEK studies involve establishing baseline conditions and thereby identifying the project effects on the communities. We incorporate our TEK studies into the design and execution of the biophysical field programs including aquatics, wildlife, vegetation, wetlands and archaeology.

TLU Studies

At TERA, we design our TLU studies to document the current use of Crown land for traditional activities by Aboriginal communities potentially impacted by projects. TLU sites include trails, habitation sites, plant harvesting sites, hunting, fishing, trapping, gathering places and sacred areas. Our TLU studies establish appropriate mitigation measures, address community concerns and document the effects assessment of current uses of the land for traditional purposes relative to projects. TEK/TLU services provided include:

  • Project introductions
  • Protocol development
  • Baseline data collection
  • Constraint mapping
  • Impact assessment
  • Mitigation strategy development
  • Process and engagement documentation
